Dr. Banu Çiçek Tülü
Sound artist
Berlin, Germany
Dr. Banu Çiçek Tülü (b. 1984, Adana, Turkey) is a sound artist, music producer, DJ, and researcher with a background in urban design, based in Berlin. She develops her ideas and research using sound as a primary medium and sonic methodologies. Her practice engages participation, social design, ecology, and feminist and queer theory, drawing on artistic, cultural, and political imagination as tools for social change. Her work is most frequently presented as multi-channel video and sound installations, sculptural elements, textile, and performance including soundwalks that investigate how urban space is experienced differently along lines of gender, race, and class. She currently lectures in the Sound Studies and Sonic Acts Master program at Berlin University of the Arts (UdK).
"Banu Çiçek Tülü uses sound as a primary medium to investigate how space is structured along lines of power who is heard, who is silenced, and what architectures of listening shape the experience of public life. Her practice draws on feminist and queer theory, ecological thinking, and social design to produce multi-channel installations, soundwalks, and performances that foreground participation and collective listening. She believes in the political possibilities of sound and music, and utilises both as empowerment tools for different communities and minority groups. Process is central: the conditions under which a work is made are as significant as the work itself."
